What is an “activated carbon filter”?

An activated carbon filter is a filter that uses activated carbon to remove unwanted substances from air or water. Activated carbon is a special form of carbon that has a very high surface area and is therefore particularly good at adsorbing (binding to its surface) chemicals, odors, and toxins.

In bongs or pipes, an activated carbon filter is often integrated into the smoking path to filter out pollutants and impurities from the smoke before it is inhaled. This can make the smoke slightly milder and less irritating, as harmful substances such as tar and other chemical residues are better filtered out. Activated carbon filters therefore enhance the smoking experience and make it less harmful to the lungs.
