What is a bong screen?
A bong screen is a small but extremely useful accessory that fits into the bowl of your bong. It ensures that your smoking material doesn't fall into the water, but stays where it belongs—and can be burned cleanly and effectively.
Without a sieve?
Then you risk small pieces slipping through, contaminating the water, or even clogging your downpipe. A screen not only ensures better airflow, but also more flavor, less mess, and a longer lifespan for your bong.
How does a bong screen work?
The screen sits inside the bong bowl—either inserted or suspended—and acts like a small filter. It holds your ground herb but allows the smoke to pass through without any issues. The effect: You get a clean, rich hit without any herb residue in your mouth or in the bong.
Not all sieves are the same – there are these variants:
- Insert sieve: The classic type is simply pushed into the bowl. Available in metal, glass, or even stone.
- Hanging strainer: Has small "wings" or brackets that allow it to be hung on the edge of the head. This is useful for deeper heads.
- Bowl strainer: Rather deep and round in shape, offers space for smaller portions – ideal for microdosing.
Tip: Some bong bowls – so-called slip bowls – have an integrated hole and do not require an additional screen, as the material slides through completely when you pull on it – practical for one-hitter fans.
Which sieve fits which head?
The diameter of the screen is crucial. It must fit the inner dimensions of your bong bowl:
- Larger sieve = less space for the herb, as it fills more of the head
- Smaller sieve = more space for the material, but make sure it fits tightly
Standard sizes are usually 12 mm, 15 mm or 18 mm, but there are also special sizes – especially for glass bongs with unusual bowls.
