What is “activated carbon”?

Activated carbon is a special form of carbon that undergoes a special process to greatly increase its surface area. This process, called "activation," is typically achieved by heating carbon materials such as wood, coconut shells, or coal in an oxygen-poor environment. This creates many tiny pores that provide an enormous surface area.

Thanks to this pore structure, activated carbon can very effectively absorb and bind substances such as gases, chemicals, toxins, and other contaminants. For this reason, activated carbon is used in many areas, including smoke filters such as those found in bongs.

Activated carbon has the ability to capture these unwanted substances through a physical process called adsorption (not to be confused with absorption). It is widely used because it is non-toxic and biologically safe.
